Dogs belong to one of the smartest classes of animals. They can easily learn to follow commands and to do tricks. Furthermore, some dogs demonstrate other exceptional talents as well.

This is clearly the case with Chaser, a Border Collie. Chaser is an incredibly smart dog that knows an amazing number of English words. Believe it or not, Chaser eventually learned some of the  basic rules of grammar.

John Pilley,  Chaser’s “Dad”, began training Chaser with simple instructions such as fetch, roll,  and jump. As Chaser continued to learn more words every day, Pilley incorporated proper nouns, verbs, adverbs, and prepositions into the training.

Now, Chaser easily followed instructions, games, and training using more vocabulary. He constantly amazed people with his intelligence and the speed with which he learned new tricks.

How This Amazing Border Collie Was Trained

Pilley trained Chaser through play. He said that play helped Chaser learn better and faster. With repeated routines, Chaser memorized the words and lessons while enjoying quality time with Pilley.

One of Chaser’s favorite training sessions was a memory game. Pilley assigned words to objects and taught them to Chaser. After the training, Pilley tested Chaser to see how well he remembered the words.

It turned out he was right 90% of the time. This was an amazing score for a dog. As Chaser kept learning new words, Pilley added even more.

By this time, Chaser now knew over 1000 words and was known world wide. Pilley stated that Chaser’s language learning just continued to grow.

This amazing Border Collie  can follow complex instructions and commands. He also plays games of noun, verb, and picture recognition.

Pilley admitted  that he had always known that Border collies are fast learners. However, Chaser’s extremely high level of intelligence surprised Pilley. This made him exert even  more effort to train Chaser and to introduce him to more challenging tricks.

Amazed as he was, Pilley felt compelled to document this experience and published a book entitled “Chaser: Unlocking the Genius of the Dog Who Knows a Thousand Words”. The book was published not only to share the story of Chaser but also to demonstrate his admiration and love for his beloved pet.
