Dog Survived The Flood By Floating On The Couch

Susan Sloan July 19, 2019

When the news reported that a dog survived the flood caused by Hurricane Florence, it caught everyone’s attention. This hurricane was one of the most devastating storms to hit the Eastern seaboard in recent history.

It was a category 4 hurricane that caused $24.23 billion worth of damage to property. It goes without saying that while the huge economic loss was devastating to the community, the loss of even one life is much worse.

Saving lives is the main priority. In this video, we will see how a single life can inspire people to take action. It does not even have to be a human life.

That life, in this case, is a dog who survived the flood. She stayed alive by floating on their couch until the rescuers arrived to save her.

Fortunately for Soshe, the cute Maltese in this video, and for her owners, help was close at hand. The Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) Disaster Response Team was in North Carolina when Hurricane Florence hit their state hard.

Floodwater submerged many suburban homes. Determinedly, this team worked non-stop to do animal rescues whether it be on land or in the water.

The Disaster Team Received A Specific Request to Help A Dog Survive The Flood Waters of Hurricane Florence

The HSMO Disaster Response Team received a specific request to check on Soshe. Her owner, who was stuck in Wilmington, asked the team to pick up her precious Maltese friend. She knew they were Soshe’s only hope for survival.

She gave them her address and off the team went to rescue Soshe. One major problem was that all the houses were submerged in water. This made it pretty difficult to locate a neighborhood, let alone a specific house.

Not only that, but the team’s boat was not functioning properly. So, the team had to paddle half a mile to even reach the neighborhood in which Soshe resided.

By the time they reached her neighborhood, the water had receded a good deal. It was just enough for them to locate the exact house they needed to find. As they paddled near the house, they heard Soshe frantically barking.

What Happened When They Arrived On The Scene

It required a team effort and a fair amount of destruction to open the front door. After the door had been opened up a little bit, they could see Soshe.

She was sitting atop the floating couch. The poor baby had probably been sitting there for about a week. Can you imagine how excited Soshe was to see her rescuers?

One of the team members went in to get Soshe. The other rescuer held the door open using his feet. After being stranded for so many days and going without food, they knew she was hungry.

As soon as Soshe was rescued, she was fed. She was so hungry that she gobbled up every last crumb of the kibble that was placed in front of her.

Soshe’s owner could not help but shed tears of joy. She had been brave until she heard that her baby was alive. She had refused to give in to despair and held on to the hope that the little dog would survive the flood.

Once she heard that she had been safely rescued, she could no longer hold back the tears. Soshe was safe. All thanks to these unsung heroes.
