The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds, Part 2
Our last post introduced you to a well-respected canine psychologist, Stanley Coren. He has written a book detailing what he learned when testing breeds of dogs for levels of intelligence. Coren tells us that he found a way to identify which are the smartest breeds of dogs. This post, The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds, Part 2, picks up where we left off.
You Will Recall That There Are Two Components Used to Calculate the Canine IQ
1. how fast is the dog able to learn new commands
2. what is the dog’s demonstrated degree of obedience.
The most intelligent breeds, according to Cohen, require up to 5 seconds to learn each new command. Further, he also claims that the smartest breeds obey new commands to a much higher degree than do the less intelligent breeds. Reportedly, the brightest of the breeds obey 95% of the time.
Here Is The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Part 2
# 59 Rhodesian Ridgeback
These very powerful and incredibly strong dogs were used for hunting the King of the Jungle in years past. Yes, they were lion hunters! Although bred for outdoors and running through all kinds of terrain, they now love the typical canine life in our homes.
The name, Rhodesian Ridgeback, is taken from both its geography of origin and the ridge that runs down his back. These beautiful and unusual dogs are fairly high up on the IQ scale but require special training. They respond best to gentleness and positive reinforcement when learning commands new to them. In other words, the carrot works better than the stick!!
#58 Alaskan Malamute
This breed is known for their strength, high endurance, and the ability to pull sleds for long distances. Individuals who love the outdoors and backpacking often say they have met their canine soul-mate in this breed. These dogs fit in well with families who enjoy outside activities.
Although very intelligent and loving dogs, they need both physical and mental stimulation. Without both of these, it is easy for them to become aggressive. If you wish to avoid them being hard to manage, keep them active in mind and body.
#57 Shiba Inu
If you also love cats, you may want to include a Shibu-Inus in your family. As a breed, they are frequently said to remind people of cats. Supposedly, they share traits that are similar.
Both cats and this dog breed enjoy time away from people, even those whom they love. Headstrong and very independent by nature, I can see why the comparison to felines. Nevertheless, these dogs are quite easy to teach new commands and rank well on the canine IQ scale.
#56 Great Dane
This breed is labeled as a “Giant” Breed. Gentle in spite of being massive in size, their hearts are easily won by their families. Now, to be honest, their size makes them tend to be a little bit clumsy. In the testing referenced by the canine psychologist, Great Danes are reasonably intelligent.
Although it takes them 25 to 40 attempts to catch on to each new command, their desire to please is a real plus. Patience is required for training these massive dogs but they are intelligent enough to be taught.
#55 Parson Russell Terrier
All of the terrier breeds have a reputation for their specific hunting traits. This particular breed of terrier is known to have high intelligence that enhances their instincts to hunt. It is good they are often outside in a field on a hunt as they have high energy levels and need the mental and physical work-out. Reportedly, they make wonderful family members and are easily trained in spite of being so energetic.
