In the first article of this ongoing series of posts about the world’s smartest dog breeds, we told you about Stanley Coren. He is a well-reputed canine psychologist. Coren is known for a book he wrote about the varying degree of intelligence among the many dog breeds of the world. Coren tested many breeds of dogs and was able to ascertain their degree of intelligence. Now, in The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds Part 4, we will share the next five breeds on his list, in order of their intelligence.
Was your canine companion on one of the previous lists? If not, maybe his breed will be listed here today or in one of the following posts.
Remember That The Canine Psychologist Calculated Each Breed’s IQ Using Two Factors
1. How fast did the breed learn each new command?
2. To what degree of obedience did the breed perform?
Coren learned that the breeds with the highest IQ take 5 seconds or less to learn each command. Additionally, Coren further informed us that the most intelligent of breeds obeyed commands to a higher degree than did those breeds failing to make the list. According to the canine psychologist, the obedience level of the breeds with the highest IQ was 95%.
Now, Here Is The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Part 4
# 49 Finnish Spitz
This breed is well-known for its natural hunting ability. One fairly unusual trait of the Finnish-Spitz is the manner in which he points out the location of the hunted game as he does so by barking. Because of this, he is called a “bark-pointer”.
Despite this of his unique pointing technique, the Finnish Spitz is considered a very friendly and outgoing dog. Because of their degree of intelligence, these dogs can quickly discern things that are a threat from those that are not. Not a bad skill to possess!
#48 Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd has a reputation for being a very intelligent breed. Their degree of intelligence is sometimes compared to that of human intelligence. This breed thrives when they are given tasks. They specifically particularly enjoy herding livestock or even helping around their homeplace. Further, they learn new skills faster than many other breeds.
# 47 Dalmatian
Everyone recognizes the famous spotted coat of the Dalmatian breed. However, most people do not know that the origin of this breed has been traced to the Dalmatia region of the country of Croatia.
Before Dalmatians became popular dogs at the local Fire House, they were often used to guard and keep horses calm. This breed’s ability to get along so well with horses led to their being used as carriage dogs as well.
You may have seen Dalmatians in Super Bowl commercials for Anheuser-Busch. However, almost everyone will remember seeing them as the canine stars in the movie, 101 Dalmatians. I shudder to think of Cruella Deville trying to make a fur coat of those gorgeous Dalmatians!!
#46 Pharoah Hound
Known for its elegance and beauty, the Pharoah Hound is also a very alert, energetic and highly intelligent dog. Theses inherent traits make this breed one of the easiest to train.
In addition, Pharaoh Hounds have particularly large ears. This enhanced anatomical feature gives them a more sensitive sense of sound and allows them to be excellent protectors.
#45 English Setter
If you are looking for a wonderful addition to your family and want a breed that is very social and loves to be around people, look no further. The English Setter is a perfect candidate for that position.
In addition to those traits, English Setters are also wonderful watchdogs as well. They are very protective of their home.
This breed possesses a great deal of energy and really need to get plenty of exercise daily. They are very smart dogs and rarely forget anything they learn. However, due to their personality, they do best with a gentle trainer who is consistent and who uses positive reinforcement. This can be in the form of an occasional treat but the best is with hugs or scratching around his ears or chest.
Was Your Favorite Breed Found on One of the First Earlier Divisions of The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List?
Please remember that there are several breeds to go on the way to the top tier of the most intelligent dog breeds listed. We plan to continue sharing this list with posts twice a week so be sure to read each one.
If your dog’s breed is not on the list at all, it does not mean that your individual dog is not smart! As discussed in a prior post on this subject, there are individual dogs that are what would be considered an outlier. This means that they do not fit the usual range of canine IQ for that breed.
