When a tiny puppy named Gracie first entered the veterinary clinic it was obvious that she was different. She really was a one-of-a-kind. He had never taken care of a two-legged puppy before.
It was obvious that the missing two legs were not due to trauma. She was born that way. It was also obvious that she had not received the care and love that all puppies deserve. Her tiny body was covered in maggots.
Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue Executive Director is Tammy Turley. She quickly found out all about Gracie’s situation. Tammy was eager to meet Gracie “in person”.
She recognized her fighting spirit immediately. That is when Tammy made up her mind to do whatever she could to make up to Gracie for the rough start she had in life.
It was not long before the two-legged puppy was adopted into the Turley family. Gracie had not trouble making friends with the other puppies in the family and quickly settled in.
Gracie played with the rest of the puppies in the Turley family with great joy. She acted as though she was no different from the rest of the puppies.
As Gracie walked, her tiny chest dragged against the ground. Although she had very strong hind legs that could get her anywhere she wished to go. But there was still a problem.
The unusual position this put her in caused a great deal of pressure on her chest. You can imagine the discomfort (if not downright pain) she would feel.
This awkward and uncomfortable position was unavoidable. Although Gracie coped well with her disability, Tammy knew she needed a little bit of assistance.
Gracie really needed a canine wheelchair. However, since Gracie has much more growing to do, she would need to have it replaced more than once. Wheelchairs, for people or for dogs, are expensive.
Thinking Outside The Box
Tammy came up with a brilliant and creative idea! She recalled that the Mostly Mutt Animal Rescue had a 12-year-old volunteer with a special talent. She reached out to him for help and he accepted the challenge.
The young fellow started immediately on the very important project to create a canine wheelchair for the two-legged puppy. This design would prove to be very different from any other wheelchair he had ever seen.
The young creator built the custom canine wheelchair for the two-legged puppy out of LEGOS! This creation is not only unique, it is serviceable.
It is amazing how well Gracie was able to motivate using the specialized LEGO canine wheelchair. This little two-legged puppy had her world turned upside down! She was both surprised and thrilled.
Gracie was finally able to run around without pain. She zipped around their house and up and down the street. Gracie could finally go pretty much anywhere any other dog could go!
She has since outgrown the original, custom-built LEGO canine wheelchair. There has been an upgraded, new and improved wheelchair.
The original volunteer wheelchair creator also built the second set of wheels. Gracie was just as excited over the second wheelchair as she was the first one.
