This dying Viet Nam Vet’s last wish was to see his fur baby once last time. It should not have been any surprise to anyone.
Their connection was so pure and strong that is might just melt your heart. Every dog should be so lucky as to have someone love them that much.
A Last Wish Based On Years of Attachment
69 year old veteran, John Vincent vividly recalled the day Patch entered his life. John was a lonely man until he welcomed a new friend into his life.
Patch brought fun, joy and love into the New Mexico home. Many wonderful memories were made until John’s failing health separated them.
The Albuquerque Journal reported John as saying about Patch, “He was the smallest, and I wanted one that could ride on my bike.
The only hair I had was on my chin, which was called a patch. And he had a little white patch, so we were the patch brothers.”
I can imagine seeing John and Patch with their matching goggles riding their bike down the street with smiles on their faces. Can’t you?
What wonderful memories John must have had of them together when he was healthy and able to do things with his best friend, Patch.
Knowing His Days Were Numbered, John Left Patch With Loving, Caring People
As John’s health began to deteriorate he reached out to a hospice center social worker, Amy Neal. He had one final wish that she could make come true. He wanted, no he needed, to see Patch one last time.
Ms. Neal was determined to make this last wish of a dying Viet Nam Veteran come true. She contacted Danny Nevarez, director of the Animal Welfare Shelter placing Patch with a new forever home.
He was very happy to take Patch to see John in the hospice center. Patch was unusually quiet the entire ride. Maybe he sensed the seriousness of the situation.
However, once Danny parked the car at the hospice center, Patch became animated. He began to whimper and wag his tail in anticipation. “It’s almost like he knew, ” said Danny.
The Last Wish Coming True
When John looked up and saw Patches entering the room, his eyes filled with tears. He said, “Yeah, that’s me, that’s daddy. Are you so happy to see me? I’m so happy to see you.”
It was very obvious that Patch was just as happy to see John. His immediate response was to give John exuberant kisses.
Spending Time With Patch Gave John Great Peace
“It was such a heart warming moment! They were so happy to see each other and to say their goodbyes. It was an honor to make this veterans final wish come true,” reported the shelter representative.
