Geomagnetic Storms and Your Dog

Susan Sloan May 13, 2024

A geomagnetic storm occurs when there’s a disturbance in the Earth’s magnetosphere. This is the region surrounding the Earth where its magnetic field dominates.  The most common disturbances caused by solar activity are solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun.

Geomagnetic effects on earth

These solar flares, or CMEs, can interact with the Earth’s magnetic field upon reaching our planet. This interaction can lead to a variety of effects.

Auroras

One of the most visually stunning effects of geomagnetic storms is the aurora, also known as the northern and southern lights. Charged particles from the Sun collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, producing colorful light displays near the polar regions. If you have any photos of an aurora, please share them with us! Magnetic Field Disturbances:

Geomagnetic storms can cause fluctuations and disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field. These variations can potentially affect technologies such as GPS systems, power grids, and communication networks.

Radiation Exposure:

During severe geomagnetic storms, there can be an increase in radiation levels in space and in the upper atmosphere. This elevated radiation can pose risks to astronauts and passengers on high-altitude flights.  However, Earth’s atmosphere provides significant protection for those on the ground.

Geomagnetic storms and humans

As for how geomagnetic storms affect humans directly, the impacts are less clear and more controversial. Some researchers have suggested that geomagnetic activity may influence human health and behavior. This includes effects on sleep patterns, mood, and cardiovascular health. However, the evidence for these effects is still inconclusive. Further research is needed to understand the potential mechanisms and impacts on human biology.

On a more personal note, several of my friends and family members had serious flare-ups of their autoimmune illnesses during this time.

The frequency and intensity of geomagnetic storms vary over time due to several factors.

Solar Cycle:

Geomagnetic storm activity tends to follow an 11-year solar cycle. This cycle is driven by the changes in the sun’s magnetic field. Solar activity is at its peak during the solar maximum phase of this cycle.  At this time, there are more frequent and intense geomagnetic storms. Solar cycle 24, which peaked around 2014, was relatively weak compared to previous cycles. However, solar cycle 25, which began around 2020, is expected to gradually increase in activity.

Variability

Solar activity is inherently variable, with periods of increased and decreased activity occurring over time. While there may be trends or cycles in solar activity, there can also be short-term fluctuations that contribute to variations in the frequency of geomagnetic storms.

Space Weather Events

Besides the solar cycle, individual space weather events such as solar flares and CMEs can cause geomagnetic storms. These events are influenced by complex interactions within the sun’s atmosphere and magnetic field. Human Activity

While human activity does not directly cause geomagnetic storms, our increasing reliance on technology means that the impacts of geomagnetic storms on power grids, communication networks, and satellite systems are more significant than in the past. This can lead to greater attention and awareness of geomagnetic storms when they do occur.

Patterns in storm activity

It’s important to note that while there may be trends or patterns in geomagnetic storm activity, predicting specific events with precision remains challenging. This is due to the complexity of the Sun-Earth system. Ongoing research and monitoring efforts are essential for understanding and forecasting geomagnetic storms and their potential impacts.

Do geomagnetic storms affect dogs?

Geomagnetic storms, caused by fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field due to solar activity, can indeed affect animals, including dogs. However, the extent of this impact is still being studied. Some researchers believe that animals may be sensitive to changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. This is possibly due to their ability to detect it for navigation or other purposes.

There isn’t a wealth of empirical evidence specifically regarding dogs and geomagnetic storms. Yet, some pet owners have reported changes in their dogs’ behavior during such events. These changes can include restlessness, anxiety, agitation, or other unusual behaviors. However, it’s essential to note that individual variations in sensitivity and responses among dogs can be significant. And, remember, not all dogs may exhibit noticeable reactions to geomagnetic storms.

What has been your experience?

We recently had a geomagnetic storm that captured the attention of thousands of Americans. Most people were only concerned about whether or not they would be able to see an aurora. Some, of course, were concerned about potential power outages. Into which category did you fall?

Did either you or your dog experience any physical or behavioral changes due to the geomagnetic storm? If so, please share the experience with us in the comments.

Our Yorkie was acting unusually strange. Nervous, with extreme anxiety. He has never done this before and we went to bed wondering what could be wrong with him. (I couldn’t sleep as usual but worse last night) so I was up scrolling on Facebook and noticed everyone’s beautiful photos they were posting of the Geo Storm/Northern Lights and clicked on several news article posts to educate myself on what exactly this was and why it happens. I ran across an article that mentioned dogs and the effect the Geo Storms can have on them. Didn’t save it but got up this morning and told my mom what I had read and searched and searched for what I remembered reading. I ran across your website and it appears that whatever I read last night was your article or taken directly from your article. There is no other explanation for why our Yorkie acted so strangely. Trying to hide, burrowing himself into things, and wouldn’t walk into another room as normal, it was almost scary to watch his behavior. I had heard about the Geostorms and the Northern Lights in the past but had no idea until I got up this morning that this was actually real behaviors in dogs as well as cats, and humans until getting up this morning to our Yorkie Yokie being completely himself again.
I understand it will happen again tonight so rest assured we will be paying close attention to his demeanor. We will keep you posted.
My mother just added that he was scared of our other dog, a labradoodle which was concerning as well with no explanation, the labradoodle having no visible concerns or odd behavior at the time.
