The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds
The world’s smartest dog breeds have been identified, according to Stanley Coren. A Canine Psychologist and author of the book, The Intelligence of Dogs, he has developed a way to determine which breeds are the smartest. The canine IQ is calculated by determining two basic factors of
- how quickly the dog is able to learn new commands
- their degree of obedience
For instance, Coren claims that the most intelligent breeds take 5 seconds or less to learn a new command. Secondly, he states that they obey those new commands approximately 95% of the time.
Is your dog very intelligent? Do you think he would make the cut based on the above-listed criteria?
Dr. Coren listed 36 Breeds on his list of The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds. Happy Mutt will be sharing these with you over the next few posts, a few at a time. Let’s see if your dog’s breed is among those listed here.
We Are Starting At Breed #64 The Maltese Terrier
The Maltese Terrier is considered to be in a lower rung identified as the “fifth tier.” This means dogs of this breed needed to repeat the trick 40-80 times before he learned it. However, he is so cute that I am not sure I would care if it took him a little bit longer to learn a new trick. What do you think?
#63 Brussels Griffon
This breed is usually thought of as very smart. They have the reputation of being easy to train. However, like many other small breed dogs, they can also be stubborn and a bit feisty as well.
Like most smart dogs, they can also be obedient and attentive if their trainer is firm and consistent. So, how well he does in learning a new trick is, to a certain degree, all up to you. Do you have what it takes?
#62 French Bull Dog
This breed is also known to be very smart and very photogenic as well. Additionally, the French Bull Dog breed has a reputation for being very easy to work with and they are frequently seen on-screen. (Titanic, Bringing Down the House, and Garden State as well as many others).
You may have read articles about them alerting their families when they were in danger as well. Smart, dedicated, handsome, and heroic! What more can you ask for in one breed of dog?
#61 The Pug
This breed is known as the pup with a “smushed up ” face. Although not bred to be intelligent, they appear to be fast to learn from errors and they quickly adapt to new surroundings. Additionally, Pugs have proven to be easy to train and have wonderful personalities and gentle nature. Further, this breed is a fantastic companion for humans of all ages.
#60 Akita Inu
Training this breed, the Akita Inu, is much like reasoning with a two-year-old child. For instance, they are known to be quite stubborn in nature and, reportedly, often try to dominate the relationship. Some people have insisted that their Akita will seem to grumble and be resentful of not getting their way.
Their high degree of emotional intelligence might make them smarter but tougher to train than some breeds. A consistent and determined trainer might be needed for this breed to reach their greatest potential. Are you that kind of trainer?
What If Your Dog Does Not Make The List of The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds?
Of course, there will always be outliers. A few dogs who happen to be of a breed listed here may be, in actuality, dumb as a rock. On the flip-side, a dog from a less intelligent breed may be a Canine Einstein. If you know such a dog, (either a canine genius or dumb as a rock Rover) be sure to let us know.
