Runners Training For A Marathon Stop Running To Save Puppies

Runners Training For A Marathon Stop Running To Save Puppies

Susan Sloan February 11, 2021

How often do you hear about runners training for a Marathon stop running to save puppies?   Joshua Scott and Ashley Blake are trail runners who occasionally compete in marathons. So when they signed up to do a 50-kilometer race on rough terrain, they knew they had to train.

The duo practiced on the Frozen Head State Park in Wartburg, Tennessee, and six miles into their run, they heard some noise coming from the side of the trail. They also saw the leaves rustling. The natural park was home to many wild creatures, so the movement could have come from anything.

Would You Interrupt Your Marathon Training to Save Puppies?

But when Joshua and Ashley got closer, they realized that they were puppies. When they talked to the park rangers, later on, they learned that the area was a popular spot for people to abandon dogs. It was near the highway, and not many people venture there.

Would You Save Puppies Found Abandoned and Freezing On the Running Trail?

There were  five pups in the litter. They were clearly abandoned, and with the temperatures dropping to around freezing, the little puppies were huddled close and shivering. The runners knew that if the tiny pups were  left there, it would only be only a matter of time before they perished. So they gathered up the pups and called the park rangers.

The couple carried the puppies to the nearest highway and met with the rangers who took them home. It was already getting dark, and there was no shelter near them. The ranger sagreed to take care of the matter the next morning. But Ashley and Scott could not get the puppies out of their heads. So the next day, Ashley called the rangers and asked how the dogs were doing. They learned that the pups were going to be handed over to a local no-kill shelter where they would be given foster homes.

The two were happy that they called help out and even decided to adopt one of the pups. Hopefully, the rest of the dogs would find their forever homes too.
