Smiley is a rescue dog that got her name for obvious reasons. When she arrived at the Pender County Animal Shelter, she had a broken leg and several injuries. Although in a lot of pain, this dog smiles at rescuers and the staff of the local shelter.
They were amazed that even though she had obviously gone through a great deal ot trauma, she was willing to forgive and to trust humans. She also demonstrated a great joy for life.
Shot at and struck by a car but she still smiles at rescuers
Smiley was taken off the streets when the shelter received a call about a stray dog that was noticed limping though town. Rescuers were immediately dispatched to save her. As soon as they saw the poor pup, they automatically knew that she was suffering.
Not only was the dog injured, she was nothing but skin and bones. The people who made the report said that someone saw her get hit by a car a few days before. They were unaware of her other injuries.
When they got the dog to a vet, they saw that she also had a gunshot wound near the broken leg. Any of the two incidents could have caused the injury.
But whatever the reason is, they knew that they had to treat her immediately. Sadly the vets ended up having to amputate the affected leg.
Through it all, the dog kept on smiling at the medical team. While she was recuperating, Smiley grinned constantly at the shelter staff that took care of her. They could not help but to smile back at her.
Incredible coincidence
The shelter shared photos of the rescued dog online and someone recognized her. Amazingly, the dog’s previous owner had named her Smiley as well.
But they said that it had been a long time since the owner had been seen around. Some other details suggested that her previous owner might be on the run.
As of now, Smiley will be staying at the shelter so that she can recuperate. There is no telling yet when she would be available for adoption. It will all depend on how fast her progress is.
