World’s Smartest Dog Breeds Part 6

Susan Sloan April 10, 2020

If you are not up-to-date on this series, you may want to start at the beginning and catch up before reading this post on the World’s Smartest Dog Breeds Part 6. Each post in the series presents five of the breeds in ascending order.

A reputable and well-known canine psychologist tested a large number of breeds from around the globe. He authored a book on the topic as well. This series of blog posts lists these breeds in ascending order of intelligence level.

How Coren Calculated the Canine IQ for Each of the World’s Smartest Dog Breeds

  • How fast the breed was able to understand and learn new commands
  • To what degree did the breed obey commands

You will not be shocked at what Coren learned about obedience. He determined that the breeds with lower IQs were less capable of obeying than those with higher IQs.

The amount of time it took breeds to learn new commands correlated with their degree of obedience as well. The most intelligent of the canine breeds achieved up to 95% on the obedience section!

Now, On to the World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Part 6

#11 Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

His Royal Canine, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

This breed is highly recognizable. This is partly because they are the chosen breed for the Royal family of England. They have been for decades. Even various television documentary series mention this fact.

Apparently, they are also known for their stubbornness as well as for their intellect.  Similar to other breeds known for high canine IQs, Corgis tend to become destructive if they do not get lots of exercise.

#10 Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog has long been recognized as one of the smartest dog breeds. However,  these dogs are often very challenging when it comes to training. They respond best to firm commands and a confident trainer. In spite of the challenges in training this breed, they are very smart. If you are consistent in your training, you will succeed.

Idleness Is The Devil’s Workshop For Dogs As Well As For Humans

Aussie’s are happiest when they are active.  If you can keep them busy performing tasks around the house or working outdoors, they will thrive. They are wonderful dogs to have as a member of the family. This is especially true when they have plenty of room and opportunity for exercise.

#9 Rottweiler

Attentive Rottweiler

Rottweilers are a keenly sharp dog breed.  However, they do differ from many of the other large and very smart breeds. In comparison to other intelligent, large breeds, they require less physical exercise than many.

What a Rottie needs most to prevent them from being restless is problem-solving. If they are not mentally challenged, they are likely to become bored. A bored Rottweiler is often a destructive Rottweiler. A dog that size and with a high IQ can do a lot of damage. There are some wonderful dog toys made to entertain such dogs.

This breed is not ideal for every person but they are perfect for the right owner.

#8 Papillon

Dynamite comes in tiny packages! Although this breed may be small, their energy level is quite high. Papillons require a great deal of physical activity. They need to burn off the extreme level of energy they possess.

Do not expect them to be ideal lapdogs.  In addition to their high degree of energy, they also possess an incredible curiosity. This breed would prefer to explore strange smells and objects over learning new commands. They are a delightful breed of dog. Beautiful and smart, this breed will draw attention wherever they go.

#7 Labrador Retriever

Yellow Labrador Retriever Seated in the Grass

Labrador Retrievers enjoy a wonderful reputation for being easy to train. They are great family dogs and often thought of as members of the family more than a pet.

Labs appear to enjoy learning and to want to please their masters. These traits are wonderful for family dogs. They also make them ideal dogs for other purposes as well.

Labs are frequently trained to serve in various capacities. They work as therapy dogs, on seek-and-rescue teams, and detecting substances such as drugs.

More Than Just A Smart Dog

This is a very versatile breed and they make wonderful companions for people of all ages. Labs are always high on the “Most Favorite Breed” list.

On a personal note

Here is a photo of our favorite Lab, Sadie Holder.

Sadie is quite attached to her “Mom”. She rarely leaves her side.

No Problem If Your Furry Friend Has Not Yet Shown Up

There are quite a few breeds from around the world on this list. We will continue to list five breeds in each article until we reach one single breed to be revealed.

Have you figured out which breed of dog will be the dog that Coren concluded had the highest canine IQ?   If you have read the previous articles in this series, you will recall that an individual canine may be smarter than others of the same breed.

Would you choose intellect over unconditional love?

Everyone likes to think their dog is one of the smartest they have ever seen.  There is nothing wrong with taking pride in your dog’s intelligence. But, most of us love them for other reasons as well. If you had to choose intelligence or unconditional love and undying loyalty from your dog, which would you pick?

Which Breeds Do You Predict Will Be Listed In The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Part 7?

We are nearing the end of the list.  There is only one more article revealing a set of five breeds. Then, there will be one final article to conclude the series. Have you come to a conclusion as to which breed will be named the Canine Einstein in that final article?  You do not have long to wait!
