World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Part 5

Susan Sloan April 6, 2020

If you have been following this continuing series of articles about the canine psychologist,  Stanley Coren, you are up-to-date on the world’s smartest dog breeds list this far. Today, we will share part 5 of that ascending list.

If you wish to know more about how Coren ascertained the intelligence quotient of each breed, read his book on the subject.

Basically, he tested a great number of dog breeds from around the globe, using two criteria to evaluate their intelligence.

The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds Part 5 reveals the next set of five breeds on Coren’s list, in ascending order intelligence.

Coren Utilized Two Factors to Calculate a Canine IQ for Each of the Breeds Tested

1. The speed with which each breed was able to learn a new command
2. The degree of obedience the breed demonstrated

It is no surprise that Coren proved that the most intelligent breeds were capable of obeying commands with much more ease than did breeds with lower canine IQs.

FIve seconds was the longest it took them to learn a new command and it often took less than that amount of time. Breed canine IQ scores were correlated to their level of obedience with the smartest breeds achieving 95%

Are You Ready for Part 5 of the World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List?

#44 Norwegian Elkhound

NORWEGIAN-ELKHOUND posed standing on the grass

Intelligent, headstrong, and beautiful, the Norwegian Elkhound is an outstanding dog. Their coat is gorgeous and very thick. They have a natural stance that comes across appearing regal.

Between their personalities and regal appearance, it is no wonder they have a royal attitude. This breed is also known for being bold and courageous.

#43 Irish Setter

Many wonderful and varied qualities make this a fantastic breed. Irish Setters are party animals and always seem to have fun whatever they are doing.

This breed is known for its love of the outdoors and playing with other dogs or with humans. Irish Setters are frequently seen in the obedience trials and they do quite well.

On a personal note.

Maybe I should not share this but, I have known quite a few Irish Setters and their families. None of the humans ever bragged about the intelligence of their dog.

Instead, they talked about how much fun they were or how beautiful they were. Most talked about how excited their dog always was to see them.

Their inherent value seemed to be in how the Irish Setter made the human feel about himself-special. This is not a bad thing. Now, with Coren’s evidence, it seems this breed has both brains and beauty

#42 Kerry Blue Terrier

KERRY-BLUE-TERRIER

This very smart and hard-working dog is easily recognized by its signature beard which is quite fluffy. Kerry Blue Terriers are affectionate, warm, loving dogs but also have a reputation for being very strong-willed.

They are sometimes called stubborn. They are incredibly loyal, gentle, and playful. This breed is hard to beat as a candidate for the ideal family dog.

#41 Bearded Collie

BEARDED-COLLIE

The Bearded Collie is one breed that must have a great deal of attention if they are to be happy. Their deceptively sweet and innocent-appearing face may mislead you.

If they do not get enough attention, this breed has a tendency to behave in a destructive manner. They require a lot of interaction with their family.

Like many hunting breeds, the Bearded Collie is very smart and extremely active. If you want to keep them happy, make sure they get plenty of exercise.

This needs to be daily, if possible. The weekend warrior type of activity limited to one or two days a week does not work for them.

#40 Gordon Setter

GORDON-SETTER Laying down

Rightfully so. Gordon Setters are loving and eager to cuddle with their human. In spite of being so lovable, they can become destructive if they do not have their mental and physical needs met.

They must have plenty of exercise to get rid of some of the high levels of energy they possess. This is true for both their brains and their bodies.

Gordon Setters have an excellent memory. Likewise, they also earned an above-average canine IQ score, according to Coren. They demonstrated the ability to respond to a first command approximately 70% of the time.

No Worries If Your Dog’s Breed Has Not Shown Up On The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Thus Far, We Have More To Reveal In The Next Post

This article will share a long list of dog breeds with you.  So, there is a good chance that your favorite breed will still be named as one of the smartest.

As mentioned in previous posts, five breeds will be revealed in each post until the final one.  That final post will be dedicated to the #1 dog selected by Cohen as the most intelligent of the world’s smartest dog breeds.

As usual, I will remind you that an individual dog may prove to be much smarter than others in the breed. Besides, if our loved ones chose us for our brains, how many of us would be selected?

We are much more interested in the unconditional love we receive from our furry friends than their IQ, right?

It is a fun fact to know and it might make it easier to train them if they have a few additional IQ points. However, bragging rights aside, I prefer to have a loyal and loving companion than one who outsmarts me on a daily basis. How about you?

Which Breeds Will Be In The World’s Smartest Dog Breeds List Part 6?

Check back in a few days to read the ongoing list of the world’s smartest dogs. Two more posts with five breeds each and the final, big finale post, to reveal what I call the Canine Einstein. (according to Coren)
